Patrick McArdle (1915-1997), (GFA represents the estate)

Patrick McArdle (1915-1997), (GFA represents the estate)

Born in 1915 in Nottingham, England, Patrick McArdle began his art studies with the French painter Amadee Ozenfant. After emigrating to the United States, McArdle enrolled to the Art Students League in New York City, where he was a student of renowned instructor Hans Hoffmann. During summers spent in Harpswell, Maine, McArdle also studied with noted marine artist Jay Hall Connaway.

McArdle’s joy in painting is clearly exhibited in his artwork, where colorful figures engage in all manner of activity, such as cavorting on the beach and ice skating in parks. Comparisons to the great post-impressionist Henri Matisse come readily to mind. McArdle’s confident and spare brushwork mark him as a true Modernist.
