Katsumi Ida
(b. 1956)
Born in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, Ida pursued formal training and graduated from the Sculpture Department at Tokyo Zokei University in 1981, and later completed his graduate studies at Hyogo University of Teacher Education in 1992. He initially honed his foundational craft in his father's workshop, and his later work was heavily influenced by prominent stone artists.
His sculptural style predominantly relies on hard materials such as basalt, granite, and stainless steel. By marrying geometric precision with organic, natural forms, he often constructs monumental pieces that balance immense physical weight with delicate, fluid themes representing transience, nature, and the passage of time.
